*April 3 Poolesville Elementary School

Kindergarten Curriculum Night

Parents are invited by students and their teachers to view classroom projects. The kindergarten curriculum night has a teddy bear theme. Contact Principal Darlyne McEleney at 301-972-7960.

April 6 Westbrook Elementary School

Community of Caring Celebration

Westbrook will hold its second annual Community of Caring Celebration by focusing on the integration of Community of Caring core values into various instructional activities throughout the day. Special guests will be Bryan Mooney, executive director of Community of Caring, and Chairperson Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Contact Principal Michael Thomas at 301-320-6506.

*April 9 Maryvale Elementary School

Sunday Funday

Head Start students and their families will join with community volunteers to listen to stories, engage in role playing, create arts and crafts, and enjoy snacks. The event is from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. Contact Sandy Peyser, Heat Start teacher, at 301-279-4990.

Week of the Young Child Kick-Off/

Special Guest Readers Day

Following a press conference in the media center to kick off the Week of the Young Child, Board of Education President Patricia B. O'Neill, Superintendent Jerry D. Weast, County Executive Douglas Duncan, County Council Vice President Blair Ewing, and other local officials will read to young children. Contact Principal Kim Bobola at 989-5676.

April 10 Rock View Elementary School

All School Reading Night

This evening program from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. provides an opportunity for parents and students to work together on reading skills and MSPAP practice activities. School staff members are available to assist. Contact Megan Stewart, counselor at Rock View, at 301-929-2002.

April 12 Woodlin Elementary School

Math Fair

Parent volunteers will assist teachers and students in activities related to mathematics in classrooms and in the gymnasium. Contact teachers Sharon Jones or Marni Levenstein at 301-650-6440.

*April 13 Col. Zadok Magruder High School

Reading is Fun Day

The Magruder child development class will be having a special Reading is Fun Day from 7:30-10:45 a.m. and 11:40 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Parents are invited to accompany their children to this reading extravaganza. High school students will be presenting stories, puppet shows and phonics activities all day long. Contact Suzi Boyle at 301- 840-4631.

April 13 Highland View Elementary School

Schoolwide Showcase

The school will host a schoolwide showcase of student work from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Families and community members will tour the school, view students' work, attend classroom presentations, visit the Science Expo, and talk with students and staff. Contact Principal Joanne Steckler at 301-650-6426.

April 14 John F. Kennedy High School

SGA-Sponsored Blood Drive

The Student Government Association at the school is sponsoring a Red Cross blood drive from 8:15 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the main gymnasium. Parents and community are welcome to participate. Contact the school at 301-929-2100.

Ongoing Greenwood Elementary School

Mentoring Program with Sherwood High School

Sherwood High School students come to Greenwood once a week for a six-week after-school program to work with 5th grade Gifted and Talented students. The older students help the younger ones use the Internet for research on social studies issues, then write a presentation for the morning announcements.
