SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under the direction of the Environmental Team Leader/Environmental Safety Specialist, the IAQ Carpenter performs carpentry-related tasks involving the remediation and restoration of mold-contaminated building surfaces, structures, and furnishings. This specialized work requires the IAQ Carpenter to use various types of decontamination equipment and supplies along with wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). In addition, the IAQ Carpenter inspects buildings to identify and eliminate sources of moisture causing mold-related issues. Frequently, the IAQ Carpenter will also make building envelope repairs and drainage modifications. Work assignments are received orally or in the form of work orders. Employees complete such assignments independently and with minimal supervision. A significant responsibility for the IAQ carpenter is to conduct annual relocatable classroom condition assessments and make recommendations for repairs and/or preventive maintenance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Completion of the MCPS IAQ Carpenter Knowledge and Skills Test at the required score. Considerable knowledge and skills in the use of the methods, equipment, and tools pertinent to wide variety of carpentry related installation, maintenance and repair activities with particular emphasis on mold remediation and restoration. Working knowledge of or be able to learn the methods and procedures for operating mold remediation and decontamination equipment. Ability to acquire the skills needed to conduct general building assessments for moisture and mold related issues. Ability to operate moisture detection equipment to determine scope of work. Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals; ability to estimate time and material needs, Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions using safe handling procedures to properly dispose of contaminated materials. Knowledge of local, state, or national codes; Ability to communicate, and work within a team or independently as necessary. Ability to work in a team environment and maintain cooperative and respectful working relationships in a diverse population. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills highly desirable. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Minimum of five years proven experience in the carpentry and remodeling trades. Thorough knowledge of applicable building/safety codes, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in both rough and finished carpentry in residential/commercial settings. Education, training and experience with blueprint reading, Maximo work order system or similar systems, indoor air quality and mold prevention/remediation required.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator¿s license with a good driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds, stooping, bending, climbing, working from ladders and roof tops and working in very hot or cold weather conditions. Required to safely use manual tools and power equipment common to the construction trades working potentially uncomfortable (e.g., crawlspaces) and hazardous conditions. Work involving the use of respiratory protection may require the successful completion of a physical fitness test and a medical examination. Mold removal activities may also require the wearing of disposable protective clothing and the use of skin and eye protection.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Completion of MCPS IAQ Carpenter Knowledge and Skills Test at the required score.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

¿ Seals seams of exterior siding and roofing membrane.
¿ Re-flashes windows and doors.
¿ Repairs/replaces soft floors and replacing carpeting with floor tile.
¿ Replaces damaged drywall and plaster ceilings.
¿ Replaces portable skirting and damaged roof vents.
¿ Installs gutter/downspout systems.
¿ Operates HEPA vacuums, portable air scrubbers, negative air machines and dehumidifiers.
¿ Operates machinery and hand/power tools common to the construction trade.
¿ Conducts indoor air quality assessments for portable classroom buildings
¿ Identifies and reports mechanical or building system deficiencies related to moisture intrusion
¿ Estimates cost, time and materials for mold remediation/restoration projects.
¿ Purchases building materials/supplies.
¿ Inspects completed work for conformance with specifications.
¿ Completes and maintains paperwork required for timesheets and work orders.
¿ Performs related work as required.
