Summary Description:
Under direction, installs, repairs, replaces, and opens locks, makes keys, and changes lock combinations using hand tools and special equipment. Work in this class requires knowledge both of the methods and tools of the carpentry trade and of the characteristics and properties of various metals, in addition to the methods and tools of locksmithing. Work involves inspection of work sites to determine time and materials needed. Assignments are generally received in the form of work orders and completed work is inspected by a supervisor.
Physical Demands:
High degree of physical dexterity and ability to perform work requiring considerable standing and bending.
Special Requirements:
Ability to respond to emergency work requests and to work overtime as required. Completion of the MCPS locksmith skills test at the required score. |
Considerable knowledge of the methods, equipment, and tools of the locksmith trade; some knowledge of the methods and tools of the carpentry trade; working knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of various key and combination locks. Ability to install, repair, assemble, and disassemble a wide variety of locks; ability to make new or duplicate keys; ability to accurately estimate time and materials needed. Ability to maintain records. Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the locksmith trade. Completion of the MCPS locksmith skills test at the required score. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

Education Training Experience:High School or GED diploma required. Demonstrated increasingly responsible experience as a locksmith or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Possession of a valid Maryland Class C non-commercial driver^s license or equivalent.

Example Duties:1. Installs new locks or repairs, replaces, and opens existing locks for doors, desks, lockers, and various other items of furniture and equipment. 2. Makes new or duplicate keys using key-cutting machine and other equipment. 3. Disassembles worn or damaged locks and either repairs or replaces defective internal parts or salvages serviceable parts if lock is beyond repair, shortens tumblers using file and inserts new or repaired tumblers into lock to change combination. 4. Keeps records concerning all outside door locks in all school and central office facilities and master keys for all locks. 5. Performs related work as required.
