Automotive Service Worker / Technician Apprentice (Shift 2)

WORKING TITLE: Automotive Service Worker / Technician Apprentice (Shift 2) GRADE: 11 MONTHS: 12
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION: Under general supervision, performs skilled and routine mechanical maintenance of buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors and other vehicular equipment. Independent judgment concerning work methods and procedures is required, but the work is subject to inspection during process and upon completion for quality and conformity with requirements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Completion of MCPS Auto Service Worker Test at required score. Pre-employment Drug test and background check required. Thorough knowledge of MCPS policies and procedures. Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of bus, truck, and automotive equipment. Knowledge of the standard practices and maintenance of tools and equipment of the bus, truck, and automotive mechanic trades; knowledge of the operation of internal combustion engines, ignition and of other systems; knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, on-board computer systems, air-brake systems and automatic transmissions. Some skill operating technical test equipment; some knowledge of proper test procedures for individual systems preferred. Skill in locating, diagnosing, and repairing malfunctions using appropriate tests to validate successful repair to the equipment. Ability to work effectively with others. Good communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: High School or GED diploma required. Four years¿ experience in the field of automotive repair/or apprenticeship training program/ASE certification (i.e. school bus or heavy truck and electronics). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Maryland State noncommercial class C driver's license, or equivalent. Must possess and maintain or secure and maintain a Maryland State commercial Class B drivers license or equivalent, with air brake, passenger/cargo and school bus endorsements within six (6) months of employment. DOT physical and random drug testing program are required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Sufficient physical strength and stamina to lift objects up to 100 lbs.; stand for extended periods of time, and complete work requiring considerable physical exertion. Exposure to inclement weather possible.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (Frequent overtime or night work required, etc.) Pre-employment Drug test and background check required. Completion of MCPS Auto Service Worker Test at required score. Possession of a complete set of bus, truck, and automotive mechanic tools including safety glasses and hearing protection that are appropriate to perform job assignments is required. Steel toe work boots or shoes are required to be worn while on duty. Ability to work overtime as required. May be required to attend training courses/programs in order to learn new automotive equipment and repair procedures.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A Automotive Service Worker

1. Lubricates buses, automobiles, and trucks; fills gas tanks and services vehicles with oil and antifreeze; checks air pressure in tires; answers road calls of disabled vehicles, changes tires, charges batteries, and makes minor emergency repairs; makes shop repairs to damaged tires.

2. Replaces mufflers, tail pipes, hoses, light bulbs, windshield wipers and fan belts; steam cleans engines; assists mechanic in body and fender repair and paint work; applies stencils to vehicles.

3. Assists technicians with diagnosing and performing various repairs.

4. Helps with receiving, issuing, picking up and delivering parts and supplies.

5. Clean, sweep floors and remove trash as needed. Clean up spills in the shop, on the lot and other locations as needed.

6. Performs related work as required.

B Technician Apprentice

To advance to the position of Technician Apprentice, grade 11, you must first obtain permanent status in the position of Automotive Service Worker. Then the following requirements must be achieved.
1. Pass the written and complete the hands on skills test at the required scores.
2. Demonstrated the ability and willingness to diagnose problems and preform the proper repairs with minimal supervision.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN ADDITION TO THOSE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE WORKER :

1. Performs general automotive repair work on buses, automobiles, trucks, tractors, and other vehicular equipment. Inspects, adjusts, and replaces/repairs necessary components and parts as needed.

2. Repairs and diagnoses problems on the cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems, diesel and gasoline engines, and a wide variety of electrical systems.

3. Completes front end alignments and repairs on steering and suspension systems.

4. Performs repairs on chassis units, brake systems, air and hydraulic, replaces clutches, standard and automatic transmissions, differential and steering units.

5. Road tests equipment to locate defects and to check repair work.

6. As directed, operates school bus or other automotive equipment.

7. Performs routine maintenance of shop equipment.

8. May be required to run road and service calls for disabled buses, maintenance trucks, etc.

9. Performs related work as required.

10. Straightens, repairs and/or replaces damaged doors, fenders, grills, bumpers, frames, cross members and other metal fixtures.

11. Performs related work as required.
