Finding the “Why” at William Tyler Page ES for National PE and Sport Week

In celebration of National Physical Education and Sport Week, Montgomery County Public Schools is highlighting the many ways physical education empowers students to build confidence, stay active and develop lifelong skills.

At William Tyler Page Elementary School, that impact starts with a simple idea: the why.

“When kids understand WHY, it changes everything,” said physical education teacher Jamie Unger.

For Unger, helping students connect to the purpose behind what they are doing transforms the way they engage. Lessons are framed through a team mindset, where students use “halftimes” to regroup before moving to the next activity, maximizing both movement and engagement.

Activities are designed with flexibility in mind, using visual supports and adaptable challenges so all learners can participate and find success. Whether adjusting equipment, scoring or distance, students are encouraged to work at a level that meets their needs while continuing to grow.

“Movement is a great way to make any learning memorable,” Unger said. “When at play in PE, your entire being is engaged. In real time you are creating, adapting, responding and problem solving.”

Through his PE program, Unger also emphasizes independence. Students learn how to assess their progress, seek out appropriate challenges and take responsibility for their own growth, skills that extend well beyond the gym.

“I want the students to be responsible for their learning,” he said. “I try to give them the tools they need to be their own coach because it’s a skill they can take outside of school if there is something they want to improve.”

At its core, the program reflects a broader belief: movement supports not only physical health, but also focus, resilience and overall well-being. By helping students understand the “why,” Unger is building habits and mindsets that can last far beyond elementary school.
