MCPS Graduation Rate Increases for Class of 2019

February 25, 2020

The four-year graduation rate for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students has risen to 88.7 percent, according to data released by the Maryland State Department of Education. The MCPS graduation rate rose 0.3 percentage points compared with last year, and is above the state average of 87.7 percent.

The graduation rate for students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) rose a significant 6.3 percent in the Class of 2019 over the previous year. Nearly 300 more LEP students graduated in 2019 than in 2018.

“We are pleased to see our graduation rate on the rise. Nearly all of our student groups showed an increase in both the percentage graduating and the actual number of students graduating,” said Superintendent Jack Smith. “While disparities between student group outcomes persist, we have and will continue to remove barriers to access and opportunity so that all students reach their full potential.”

The Class of 2019 experienced increases in graduation rates for all student groups, with the exception of students of two or more races (Table 1). The graduation rate for Hispanic/Latino students rose to 76.1, a one-year increase of 0.3 percentage points. The graduation rate for Black or African American students rose to 89.7, a one-year increase of 0.2 percentage points and a three-year increase of 1.5 points.

“While we have made progress in our efforts to close achievement gaps, there is more work to be done to ensure all students are learning, growing and meeting their full potential,” Dr. Smith added.
