Nyillian Fye, a Thomas Edison High School of Technology student and a June graduate of Springbrook High School, was recognized with a silver medal for her knowledge, skills and abilities at the SkillsUSA-VICA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in Kansas City, Missouri.

Fye participated in the Basic Health Care Skills Championship and placed second in this national competition that tested her level of health occupation knowledge and skills of basic and fundamental health care. Fye's skills were evaluated through hands-on demonstration, written examination, interviewing and an oral presentation.

Jessica Brunson, a June graduate of Gaithersburg High School, completed her term as elected student president of the Maryland Association of SkillsUSA, Inc., this spring and attended the conference as a voting delegate. Fye and Brunson were among 11 Edison students who participated in the national SkillsUSA-VICA conference.

SkillsUSA is the national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. It sponsors the SkillsUSA Championships annually to recognize the achievements of vocational students and to encourage them to strive for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations. During the annual national-level Skills Championships, more than 4,500 students competed in 75 occupational and leadership skill areas.

The contests are planned by technical committees made up of representatives of labor and management and are designed to test the skills needed for a successful entry-level performance in given occupational fields. Contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations, and these industry representatives set test competencies.
