Board of Education Seeks Applicants for Appointment for Vacancy in District 3

ROCKVILLE, MD—Individuals who live in Board of Education District 3 in Montgomery County are invited to apply for the vacancy created by the passing of Mrs. Patricia O’Neill in September.

The appointment of an individual to complete the remaining year of the current term will be made by the Board of Education. The appointment process includes a review of submitted applications, personal interviews, voter registration verification, and confirmation of district residency. The Board intends to interview selected candidates on or about November 30, 2021, and complete the appointment process shortly thereafter.

By law, the individual chosen must be a registered voter of Montgomery County and reside within Board of Education District 3, which encompasses parts of Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Kensington, and Potomac. The specific precincts that comprise the district can be found in Section 3-901(f)(3)(vii) of the Education Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The boundaries of the district also can be identified by calling the Board of Elections at 240-770-8500. An individual who is subject to the authority of the Board of Education, such as an employee of the school system, may apply and will be considered for the vacancy but would be required to resign their position if selected to serve as a member of the Board.

Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on November 5, 2021. For additional information about the position, please call Ms. Lori-Christina Webb, the Board of Education’s chief of staff, at 240-740-3030. Individuals are requested to mail, hand deliver or e-mail the documents to the Board of Education. The mailing address is 850 Hungerford Drive, Room 123, Rockville, Maryland 20850. Individuals wishing to be considered for appointment must submit the following:

  1. A signed letter expressing the applicant's desire and willingness to serve on the Board of Education as the District 3 representative with a term ending in November 2022, and a statement regarding the applicant’s understanding of the substantial workload and time commitment;
  2. A brief record of the applicant's personal history and relevant civic, professional, and other experience (a resume will suffice);
  3. A statement certifying that the applicant is a registered voter of Montgomery County and resides in District 3; and
  4. Contact information including e-mail addresses and telephone numbers where the applicant can be reached.
