State Honors 22 of Montgomery County Schools for Achieving Substantial Improvement on Statewide Tests -- Ten Schools Share Cash Award of $277,863

Twenty-two Montgomery County schools have been named among the state's fastest improving schools as part of a $2.75 million statewide School Performance Recognition program, a key component added to Maryland's 10-year-old school reform effort in 1996.

Ten elementary schools were awarded a total of $277,863 in additional state funding for achieving "substantial and meaningful improvement" toward meeting the state's educational standards over a minimum of two consecutive years. The ten schools elementary schools are:

  • Bells Mill

  • Bradley Hills

  • Cloverly

  • Darnestown

  • Jones Lane

  • Thurgood Marshall

  • Seven Locks

  • Stone Mill

  • Travilah

  • Wood Acres

    In addition, 12 county elementary schools received a School Performance Recognition Certificate for achieving one year of significant improvement. They are:

  • Belmont

  • Bethesda

  • Burning Tree

  • Cashell

  • Cold Spring

  • Garrett Park

  • Lakewood

  • Laytonsville

  • Monocacy

  • Lois P. Rockwell

  • Westbrook

  • Wyngate

    This is the second consecutive year that Cloverly and Jones Lane elementary schools have received a cash award in the school recognition program.

    A total of 94 schools from 18 of Maryland's 24 school systems shared the $2.75 million of additional funding in amounts ranging from $17,446 to $54,213 per school. The size of the award was based in part on the enrollment of each improving school. An additional 143 schools were recognized with certificates.

    An awards ceremony held on September 23rd in Essex, Maryland was attended by Superintendent Jerry D. Weast, Board of Education members, PTA members,school principals and other administrators. State Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick and Governor Parris N. Glendening presented the cash awards and certificates to the winning schools.
