Outdoor Ed Celebrates 60 Years
The Outdoor Education Program marked a major milestone on Oct. 14 as it celebrated its 60th anniversary at the Lathrop E. Smith Environmental Education Center. Founded by Joe Howard, the program has been instrumental in shaping environmentally conscious individuals for six decades.
The commemorative event brought together a diverse group of attendees, including former students who have pursued careers in environmental fields. The celebration kicked off with heartfelt remarks from Joe Howard, who shared his vision and passion for Outdoor Ed. Reflecting on the program's journey, Howard expressed his gratitude to the dedicated staff and students who have contributed to its success over the years.
One of the highlights of the event was the recognition of the five supervisors who have led Outdoor Ed throughout its history. From left to right, Joe Howard, Laurie Jenkins, Bernie Samm, Dave Honchalk, and Lee Derby stood together, representing the continuity and commitment that has defined the program.
The festivities continued with various engaging activities and exhibits, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the wonders of the natural world. Participants had the opportunity to plant trees, gaining firsthand experience in environmental stewardship. Additionally, they explored exhibits showcasing Maryland agriculture, deepening their understanding of sustainable practices.
"Outdoor Ed has been a transformative force in the lives of countless individuals, instilling a love for nature and a sense of responsibility for our environment," said current program director Lee Derby "It's inspiring to see how this program has evolved and continues to shape future generations of environmental leaders."
To capture the essence of the event, a video was created showcasing the highlights and testimonials from attendees. The video serves as a testament to the lasting impact of Outdoor Ed and its role in fostering environmental awareness.
As Outdoor Ed celebrates its 60th anniversary, the program remains committed to its mission of nurturing a deep connection between individuals and the natural world. With a rich history and a promising future, Outdoor Ed continues to inspire and empower generations to become stewards of the environment.
