MCPS Students to Receive $500 Scholarships and FAFSA/MHEC help at 17th Annual HBCU Fair

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students can earn on-the-spot $500 scholarships and get help completing their FAFSA/MHEC One Application onsite at the 17th Annual HBCU Fair. 

More than 1,000 students, parents and community members are registered to attend this year’s fair on Friday, Feb. 14 at The Universities at Shady Grove. The free, in-person event will provide students in Grades 8–12 an opportunity to meet representatives from more than 30 HBCUs and 20 organizations. Representatives will share information and answer questions from students and parents about admissions, financial aid, testing, majors and much more. 

Six $500 scholarships will be awarded on-the-spot by the Montgomery County National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) which consists of the nine historically black Greek organizations (“Divine 9”).

New this year is the FAFSA/MHEC completion event open to all college-bound MCPS students who register, not just those who will attend HBCUs. Representatives from The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), Montgomery College Financial Aid Outreach, and the TRiO Educational Opportunities Center will be onsite to provide individual support for students and parents in completing their FAFSA and MHEC one application. Spanish interpreters will be available.

The event will also feature a college preparation workshop for middle school students and parents, a discussion on college life, scholarship information and more. This event is co-sponsored by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and the Montgomery County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
