MCPS Graduation Rate Rises, But Gaps Remain
Rockville, Md. – Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) saw a 91.8% four-year graduation rate for the Class of 2024, according to the Maryland State Department of Education. This is a 2.2 point increase from last year and 4.3% above the state average of 87.6%.
Notably, the graduation rate for Hispanic/Latino students increased by 6.6 percentage points and was up 12 percent for multilingual learners. While overall progress is positive, some student groups saw declines, including students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) with a decrease of 2.8 percentage points, students identifying as Two or More Races down 2.2 percentage points, and White students with a decrease of 0.6 percentage points.
"While we celebrate the significant strides made, especially for our multilingual learners and Hispanic/Latino students, the declines we've seen in certain groups are a stark reminder that our work is far from over,” said MCPS Superintendent Thomas W. Taylor. “Living our values, including our commitment to excellence, demands that we confront these disparities head-on, with unwavering resolve. We are not just aiming for improvement; we are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background or challenges, has the opportunity to thrive and graduate prepared for a future of success."
The superintendent's budget aims to provide extra support to schools with special education programs and emergent multilingual programs. This includes adding 689 educator positions to meet staffing guidelines for special education and increasing material resources to schools based on specific student populations determined by the number of students receiving FARMS (Free and Reduced-price Meals System), special education and emergent multilingual learner services.
