DELAYED OPENING for Students on Tuesday, February 3

Schools will open two hours late. Offices will open on time.

All MCPS schools are ready and we are glad to be returning to school on Tuesday– but it will not be an easy return. Conditions are improving; however, our streets and sidewalks are NOT perfect. Ice and large snow piles remain everywhere, on sidewalks, at bus stops, and along neighborhood roads and will be there until significant melting can occur. That will not be anytime soon.

Bus service: While we will make every effort to serve all stops on Tuesday, we may not be able to reach every bus stop, particularly in neighborhoods with narrow, icy, or restricted roadways that do not safely accommodate school buses. But we are going to try! MCPS is committed to providing student transportation; however, transportation service may be interrupted for some students due to the amount of snow on our county roadways. This is despite the great effort by road crews across the county.  

Bus operators and attendants will exercise caution when entering neighborhoods. If conditions are unsafe for bus passage, service to that stop will not be available. In those instances, the inaccessible stop will be documented and families will be notified. Or if, as a family member, you feel a bus cannot get to your usual bus stop, then families can report that to the MCPS Division of Transportation Services and the Montgomery County Service Center 311 (240-777-0311).

For This Week:

Please take extra care when traveling to and from school:

• Allow extra time for travel and be patient with buses, walkers, and drivers. Drive slowly, and carefully. Student drivers are encouraged to be especially careful.
• Watch carefully for ice, narrowed lanes, and blocked sidewalks or curb cuts.
• Stay out of roadways when walking, if possible. Rely on the safe route that you identified today for tomorrow’s access to school.
• Look both ways when crossing any street and make sure drivers see you.
• Use caution when driving near bus stops, crosswalks, and school entrances (as some entrances and exits to roads and facilities may be obstructed by snow/ice piles).

Expect delays (!), and please be patient as you wait for buses and walk or drive to school on Tuesday.

To recap:

• Schools will open two hours late. Offices will open on time.
• Morning bus routes will operate on a two-hour delay.
• All field trips and activities that begin at 10:30 a.m. or earlier are canceled, including programs at Thomas Edison High School of Technology.
• Infant and Toddler appointments scheduled before 10 a.m. are canceled; appointments scheduled at 10 a.m. or later will continue as planned.
• Morning PreK/Head Start and AM PreK Special Education programs are canceled.
• Morning, all-day and After-school childcare programs may operate as scheduled, families are encouraged to contact their childcare provider.
• Afternoon PreK/Head Start and PM PreK Special Education programs will begin at their regular time.
• Schools will dismiss at their normal time.
• Community Use programs occur as scheduled.

We will update the status for Wednesday on Tuesday before 6 p.m.

Las escuelas abrirán dos horas más tarde. Las oficinas abrirán a tiempo.

Todas las escuelas de MCPS están listas y nos alegra regresar a clases el martes, ¡pero no será un regreso fácil! Las condiciones están mejorando; sin embargo, nuestras calles y aceras NO están perfectas. Aún quedan hielo y grandes montículos de nieve en todas partes: aceras, paradas de autobús y calles vecinales, y permanecerán hasta que se derrita significativamente, lo que no ocurrirá pronto.

Servicio de autobuses:
Aunque haremos todo lo posible por cubrir todas las paradas el martes, es posible que no se llegue a algunas, especialmente en vecindarios con calles estrechas, heladas o con restricciones que no permiten el paso seguro de los autobuses escolares. ¡Pero lo intentaremos! MCPS está comprometido a brindar transporte a los estudiantes; sin embargo, el servicio podría verse interrumpido para algunos debido a la nieve en las calles del condado, a pesar del gran esfuerzo de los equipos de despeje.

Los conductores y asistentes de autobús tomarán precauciones al ingresar a los vecindarios. Si las condiciones no permiten el paso seguro, el servicio a esa parada no estará disponible. En esos casos, la parada inaccesible será documentada y las familias notificadas. Esta semana:

• Tomen precauciones al trasladarse hacia y desde la escuela.
• Planeen tiempo adicional y tengan paciencia con autobuses, estudiantes que caminan y conductores. Conduzcan despacio y con cuidado. Los estudiantes conductores deben extremar precauciones.
• Presten atención al hielo, carriles estrechos y aceras o rampas bloqueadas.
• Eviten caminar por la calle cuando sea posible. Usen rutas seguras previamente identificadas.
• Observen en ambas direcciones al cruzar y asegúrense de que los conductores los vean.
• Tengan cuidado al conducir cerca de paradas de autobús, pasos peatonales y entradas de escuelas. Algunas entradas y salidas podrían estar bloqueadas por nieve/hielo.

Esperen retrasos (!) y sean pacientes al esperar autobuses o trasladarse a la escuela.

Resumen:

• Se cancelan excursiones y actividades que comiencen a las 10:30 a.m. o antes, incluidos programas en Thomas Edison High School of Technology.
• Se cancelan citas de Infantes y Niños pequeños antes de las 10 a.m.; citas a las 10 a.m. o después continuarán según lo programado.
• Se cancelan programas de PreK/Head Start y PreK Educación Especial matutinos.
