Schools To Benefit from Points Scored by Wizards Star
November 6, 2006
Ten Elementary and Eight Middle Schools, Mark Twain School To Benefit from Gilbert Arenas’ Scores for Schools Program
Nineteen schools in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will receive $100 for each point made by Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas during home basketball games throughout the season.
On October 30, Arenas made the pledge that he would donate the money for each point he scores in Wizards home games. In a random drawing of schools throughout the Washington region, Arenas selected one school for each of the Wizards’ 41 home games this season, and plans to donate $100 for every point he scores to the selected school.
Following up on that news with a press conference October 31, Wizards owners Abe and Irene Pollin promised to donate $100 to a Washington-area school for every point Arenas scores in the 41 Wizards away games.
The 82 winning schools were chosen from a pool of 190 area schools. The program, dubbed Scores for Schools, will help supply schools with computers, athletic uniforms and equipment, and fund after-school programs.
Neelsville Middle School in Germantown is the first MCPS school to benefit from the program.
The 18 other MCPS schools to receive money are Broad Acres, Bethesda, Brooke Grove, Damascus, Dr. Charles R. Drew, East Silver Spring, Roscoe R. Nix, Judith A. Resnik, Rolling Terrace and Washington Grove elementary schools; Benjamin Banneker, Gaithersburg, Kingsview, A. Mario Loiederman, Montgomery Village, North Bethesda and Sligo middle schools; and Mark Twain School.
Last year, Arenas was the fourth leading scorer in the NBA with an average of 29.3 points per game. In games played at Verizon Center last year, Arenas averaged 30.4 points per game with a total of 1,216 points scored.
More information and a complete list of the winning schools are at the link below.
