Grade 2 Students Attend Strathmore Concert
November 8, 2006
10,000 Second Graders To Attend National Philharmonic Concert at The Music Center at Strathmore
Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Student Concerts Mark Third Year
“My favorite part was when everybody sang together in the audience.”—Hanna, age 7
“I loved the music. It sounded beautiful.”—Amanda, age 7
“I had fun because it was my first time being to the orchestra.”—James, age 7
The Music Center at Strathmore will open its doors on November 14, 15, and 16 to all Grade 2 students from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). The students will attend an interactive performance especially designed for young students, played by the National Philharmonic and conducted by Maestro Piotr Gajewski. To enhance the educational opportunities presented during the concert, teaching materials were designed by the National Philharmonic and MCPS for teachers to use in preparing their students for the performance.
One of the important goals of the concert experience is to allow the second grade students to listen to young musicians who can be role models for the grade school students. Three winners of the National Philharmonic Concerto competition held in October were chosen to perform a concerto movement. Violist Daniel Getz, violinist Sophia Uddin, and violinist Patricia Wnek will each perform on one of the three days of concerts.
The concerts are co-presented by National Philharmonic, Strathmore, and MCPS, with additional funding from Montgomery County, and sponsored by the RFI Foundation and Comcast of Montgomery County. Additional funding for the program this year is being provided by the Philip L. Graham Fund.
