Four Title I Schools to Hold Parent Meetings

May 1, 2007
Parent meetings will be held at four federally funded Title I elementary schools in May to describe the enrollment options which may be available next year in response to requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB Act).

The meetings, all of which begin at 7:00 p.m., will be held at Broad Acres Elementary School on Monday, May 7, 2007; Rolling Terrace Elementary School on Tuesday, May 8, 2007; Summit Hall Elementary School on Wednesday, May 9, 2007; and Oak View Elementary School on Thursday, May 10, 2007.

The four schools are awaiting this year's results of the Maryland School Assessment (MSA), scheduled for release in June, to determine if they will be required to provide the choice options next year. The Title I schools only will provide the enrollment options if they do not meet their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets in the same content area on the MSA for the second consecutive year. Once a school achieves the AYP standard for two consecutive years, the school no longer is required to participate in the choice option. It is important to note that each school met AYP goals in all but one subgroup in one content area.

The meetings have been scheduled to give parents adequate notice to plan for potential enrollment options. An information packet, including notification about the meetings, was mailed to parents.

The NCLB Act provides parents with the option to seek enrollment of their children in another designated school if their home Title I school has not demonstrated two years of sustained improvement in overall student performance. In Montgomery County, the choice options for each of these Title I schools are listed on the Montgomery County Public Schools web site at the link below.
