MCPS Instructional Television Produces Award-Winning Lineup of Programs for Students, Parents, Staff, and Community

New “Math Dude” Series and “Teach for MCPS” Lead the Way with Six Major Awards Each; “Great Staff” Segment Earns Local Emmy

Seven video programs produced by Montgomery County Public Schools Instructional Television (MCPS ITV) have won a total of 25 awards for excellence—so far this year.

Highlights include six awards for “The Math Dude,” including a first place Telly* award, and six awards for the teacher recruitment video “Teach for MCPS,” including an Aurora “Best in Show” award. **

“The Math Dude” helps middle and high school students improve their algebra skills. Teacher Mike DeGraba hosts these fast-paced, humorous programs about important Algebra 1 concepts. The programs serve as learning reinforcement as the concepts are being taught in the classroom and as students prepare for the state High School Assessment in algebra. Individual episodes can be viewed on MCPS Cable Channel 33, online at www.mcpsmathdude.org, and as podcasts.

“Great Staff: Emily Luedtke” won four awards, including an Emmy *** from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in the category of Informational/Instructional/Feature Segment. The video follows a typical day for Luedtke, a first year teacher at James Hubert Blake High School. She helped develop a new program at Blake for special education students to work on fundamental academic, life, and community skills.

Other winning shows include “Building Cultural Competence,” “Technology Today, Success Tomorrow,” an instructional video on George Washington Carver, and “The Carver Years,” a history of the Carver Educational Services Center (the school system’s administrative building) that includes the building’s days as a segregated high school and junior college.
