Back-to-School Fair a Resounding Success, Thousands Attend

August 19, 2008
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Back-to-School Fair held on Saturday, August 16, was a resounding success, as evidenced by the impressive turnout, positive feedback gathered from participants, and the strong support of local civic, business, and community organizations.

Staff from the Department of Communications, which organized the event, estimate that at least 5,000 people attended the fair. Shuttle buses provided by the MCPS Department of Transportation were filled throughout the day, as were the parking lots at Montgomery College. At the fair, parents were able to ask questions of MCPS staff, learn about school system programs and operations, and access information about community resources. Participants also enjoyed children’s activities, entertainment, food, and a raffle of donated items.

More than 96 percent of parents who completed the feedback form agreed that the fair made it easier to understand how to help their child be successful in school. When asked what they liked best about the fair, parents commented on the availability of information about the school system, the diversity of the families who attended, Edline and QuickNotes demonstrations, the warm welcome from MCPS staff, and the availability of staff to answer questions.

The fair was made possible by the support and generosity of local businesses, community organizations, and government agencies. Donations of goods and services exceeded $70,000. Montgomery County government agencies that participated included Health and Human Services, Fire and Rescue, Police, Recreation, Public Libraries, Volunteer Center, and Board of Elections. Through the collaborative efforts of the school system and community partners, the fair was able to provide parents with information and resources to help them support learning and student achievement.
