Governor’s Stops at Walter Johnson High School, College Gardens Elementary Will Highlight Schools’ Modernization Projects and Signature Programs

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and County Executive Isiah Leggett will join Dr. Jerry D. Weast, superintendent of schools, Nancy Navarro, president of the Montgomery County Board of Education, and other board members on back-to-back visits to two Montgomery County schools—Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda and College Gardens Elementary School in Rockville. The Governor has been visiting schools throughout the state as the academic year begins. His stops in Montgomery County are to two schools that have received substantial construction funding from the state and county. Walter Johnson is in the midst of a multi-year, phased modernization process and College Gardens reopened last January after a two-year project to rebuild the school.

Principals at the two schools—Dr. Chris Garran at Walter Johnson and Dr. Albert DuPont at College Gardens—will lead guests on school tours. At Walter Johnson, the Governor will pass through both original and recently rebuilt sections of the school and overlook a layout of 40 portable classrooms that are in use during the entire renovation effort. The Governor will conclude his visit by speaking to a class of 9th grade students in an Advanced Placement government course. At College Gardens, the Governor will plant a tree in the school courtyard, after visiting a Chinese immersion class, among others.
