96 Schools Earn State Performance Recognition Awards

A total of 96 elementary and secondary schools in Montgomery County Public Schools earned certificates of recognition from the Maryland State Department of Education in the 2008 Maryland School Performance Recognition Program. The awards were based on performance in the 2007–2008 Maryland School Assessment and High School Assessments.

Ten Title I elementary schools, schools that qualify for federal funds because they serve many low income students, also received $5,533.93 each for the performance of their students on the assessments.

Sixty-three additional elementary schools, 12 middle schools, and 11 high schools also received recognition based on overall achievement or for improvement within a subgroup from the 2007 to the 2008 MSA/HSA. Subgroups include race/ethnicity, special education, limited English proficiency, and students who are receiving free or reduced-price meals.

Twenty-three schools of these schools were recognized for both overall achievement and improvement within a subgroup. Among them was a Title I school, Highland Elementary. Highland was recently named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School. A second Title I school, Viers Mill Elementary, also received recognition for overall achievement.
