103 MCPS Schools Earn State Performance Recognition

A total of 103 schools in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) earned recognition from the Maryland State Department of Education in the 2009 Maryland School Performance Program. Recognition was based on student performance on the 2008–2009 Maryland School Assessment and High School Assessments.

Sixteen Title I elementary schools, schools that qualify for federal funds because they serve many low income students, received $2,000 each for the performance of their students on the assessments. Three of these schools—Burnt Mills, Highland, and Viers Mill— were cited for overall achievement.

Sixty-one additional elementary schools, 15 middle schools, and 11 high schools also received recognition based on overall achievement or for improvement within a student subgroup from the 2008 to the 2009 state assessments. Of these schools, eighteen were recognized for both overall achievement and improvement within a subgroup. Student subgroups include race/ethnicity, special education, limited English proficiency, and students who are receiving free or reduced-price meals.

Last year, 96 MCPS schools earned recognition in the School Performance Program.
