ROCKVILLE, MD--Alan Xie, sophomore at Richard Montgomery High School, was elected the 2010-2011 student member of the Montgomery County Board of Education on April 28.

Xie was chosen by 73.64 percent of the secondary students who cast ballots in the election, conducted by the Montgomery County Region of the Maryland Association of Student Councils (MCR). The overall voter turnout was 86.67 percent (64,878 of 74,854 students). All high schools and middle schools submitted election results, along with the Randolph Academy alternative program and Rock Terrace School.

Xie defeated Nick Maggio, a junior at Damascus High School.

Xie will begin his term as the 33rd student member of the Board on July 1st. He has been active in student government for several years and currently is the MCR Special Programs Coordinator. He also has past experience as a delegate to MCR and as a councilmember on the Maryland Association of Student Councils.

Xie counts communication between students and administration as a priority. He said in his position statement: “Students lie at the core of our school system. We will reach out to every student and work together to lay the foundation of our future. I value our students’ concerns, ideas, and dreams”.

The student member of the Montgomery County Board of Education votes on all issues that come before the board with the exception of capital and operating budgets, collective bargaining and school boundary decisions.
