Spring MCPS Parent Academy Sessions Announced
March 22, 2011
Staying fit as a family, the new “common core” state standards and transitions to middle and high school are among the topics that will be covered during the spring session of the MCPS Parent Academy.
The MCPS Parent Academy schedule for April, May and June features more than 30 classes on a variety of topics. The classes, which are free, are held at locations throughout the county and are led by MCPS staff, community partners or experts on a specific topic.
“The MCPS Parent Academy is a way for parents to stay engaged and involved in their child’s education,” said Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Superintendent Jerry D. Weast. “Parents will learn useful strategies and tips for helping their children reach their greatest potential.”
Eric Davis, director of the MCPS Department of Family and Community Partnerships, said attendance at academy sessions has been significantly higher this year and that should continue in the spring.
“We have a great lineup of classes for the spring that features something for every parent at MCPS,” Mr. Davis said. “Some of our classes are specifically targeted for this time of year, including sessions on transitions to kindergarten, middle school or high school; summer safety; and reading during the summer break.”
The MCPS Parent Academy will wrap up with “A Night on the Town” in downtown Silver Spring on Friday, June 10—an event that will feature family entertainment and a chance to celebrate the end of a great school year.
Some MCPS Parent Academy workshops are presented in Spanish, and free childcare and interpretation services are available upon request. The Department of Family and Community Partnerships, which oversees the Parent Academy, has forged numerous alliances with community-based organizations to provide top-notch programming and content and other support for the workshops.
