REMINDER: First Superintendent's Book Club to be Held Tonight

Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua P. Starr is holding his first Book Club event tonight (Tuesday, November 29, 2011) and the community can participate in a variety of ways. This is the first of three book club events planned for the 2011-2012 school year.

The book clubs are one of the ways Dr. Starr, who began his tenure on July 1, is meeting and engaging the community, staff and students of MCPS. Since early September, the superintendent has also been holding Listen and Learn events with staff and the community at schools around Montgomery County. He also has held two Student Town Hall meetings and has visited many schools to observe teaching and learning.

“The book clubs will provide a less formal way for us to have a conversation about education and will provide an opportunity for me to share some of my educational philosophy,” Dr. Starr said. “I’m looking forward to a great conversation.”

Dr. Starr has chosen “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Dr. Carol S. Dweck as the first book. Dr. Dweck (via Skype) will participate in the first hour of tonight's event as part of a panel discussion. There will also be audience questions and comments.

The discussion will be held in the MCPS TV studio at the Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Dr. in Rockville, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Viewers at home who wish to participate will be able to watch online or on TV and then join the discussion via email and Twitter. The program will be shown live on the Superintendent’s Book Club website and on MCPS TV (Comcast channel 34).

The other two book clubs are scheduled for Jan. 31, 2012, and April 24, 2012.
