Superintendent Releases Report on Listen and Learn Sessions, Student Town Halls

Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr has released a summary report on the Listen and Learn events held over the past three months with the community, staff and students.

More than 1,800 people attended 17 Listen and Learn events for staff and the community that were held at locations throughout the county. More than 560 people also submitted written comments on cards handed out at the events and through an email form on the MCPS website.

“I am extremely grateful that so many people participated in my Listen and Learn sessions,” Dr. Starr said. “Their honest input and insightful questions have allowed me to quickly gain a broad understanding of the successes and challenges facing our district now, and the areas we should be focusing on in the coming years.”

The 11-page report provides an overview of the broad issues that were raised at 10 Listen and Learn sessions for the community and seven sessions held with staff. Among the topics covered in the report are student performance and expectations; programs and opportunities; special education; curriculum and instruction; facilities and technology; and professional development.

The report also provides a brief summary of two Student Town Hall events that were held at high schools and broadcast live on the MCPS website and on MCPS TV.

After the New Year, Dr. Starr will hold additional community events centered around four specific topics: special education, English language learners, gifted education, and social and emotional competencies. Details on these events will be available soon.
