Blair HS Student Named a Finalist in Intel Science Talent Search

A Montgomery Blair High School student has been named a finalist in one of the nation's most prestigious precollegiate science competitions.

Frederic Koehler, a senior, was named a finalist in the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search on Wednesday (January 25), and will compete for the top prize of $100,000. Mr. Koehler is one of just 40 finalists nationally and is the only finalist from the state of Maryland. His project is titled Quick and Efficient: Fast Algorithms for Completion Time and Batch Minimization on Multiple Machines. (Watch a video of Frederic explaining his project).

The Intel Science Talent Search is administered by the Society for Science & the Public, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to public engagement in scientific research and education. There were 1,839 entries for the 2012 competition. Earlier this month, 300 semifinalists were chosen, including 14 from MCPS--among the most of any district in the nation.

Mr. Koehler and the other finalists will gather in Washington, D.C., for a week-long event, March 8-13, and undergo a rigorous judging process. The top winners will be announced at a black-tie awards ceremony at the National Building Museum on March 13.
