Superintendent Starr Testifies Before U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee

Superintendent of Schools Joshua P. Starr testified this morning before the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies. Dr. Starr was one of four superintendents that provided testimony and answered questions about the importance of federal funding in public education.

In his testimony, Dr. Starr emphasized that federal funding can be a catalyst for innovation and collaboration in public education. About 3 percent of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) budget comes from federal funds.

“I was honored to speak before the Subcommittee and thank the members for providing me with this opportunity,” Dr. Starr said. “I appreciated the chance to share how we use federal dollars in our school district and highlight the importance of a consistent federal investment in public education.“

The subcommittee is chaired by U.S. Representative Denny Rehberg (R-Montana) and the Ranking Member is U.S. Representative Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Connecticut). Also testifying with Dr. Starr were Ron Seaver, Superintendent of Central Union School District in Lemoore, California; Dr. Gwile Freeman, Superintendent of Catahoula Parish School District in Harrisonburg, Louisiana; and Dr. Timothy Mitchell, Superintendent of Schools for the Rapid City Area Schools in Rapid City, South Dakota.
