MCPS Students Advance in Siemens Science Competition

October 25, 2012
Twelve Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have been named regional finalists or semifinalists in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology.

Neil Davey of Montgomery Blair High School was named a regional finalist, and will now compete in one of six regional events held in November. Davey is the only public school student from Maryland that has been selected to compete in the regionals. Winners of these events will compete at the national finals in Washington D.C., in December, with a chance to win one of two grand prize scholarships of $100,000 each.

Eleven students from Montgomery Blair, Thomas S. Wootton, Richard Montgomery and Poolesville high schools were named semifinalists in the Siemens competition (listed below). Only two other Maryland students were named semifinalists.

The Siemens Competition is held each year to highlight outstanding high school students in the areas of science, mathematics and technology. This year, 2,255 students registered to enter the competition, with a total of 1,504 projects submitted. Nationally, 322 students were named semifinalists and 93 were named regional finalists.

Administered by the College Board, students in the Siemens Competition are vying for college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000, in individual and team categories.
