MCPS Class of 2014 Earns a Record $339 Million in Scholarships

As the 2013-2014 school year comes to an end, the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Class of 2014 has a lot to celebrate.

Graduates from the Class of 2014 have earned $338.9 million in college scholarships to date—an increase of more than $40 million over last year. The total value of scholarships earned is expected to grow over the next few weeks as final data is gathered.

“I am so proud of our students who have worked hard and performed at high levels,” said Superintendent Joshua P. Starr. “Their success is a testament to their determination, the support of their families, and the dedication of the MCPS staff.”

Members of the Class of 2014 received several prestigious scholarships and awards for outstanding academic performance and community involvement. MCPS had one of two Maryland students named a 2014 U.S. Presidential Scholar; five students received good-through-graduation scholarships from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; 19 students received full-tuition Posse Scholarships, and 163 students were named semifinalists for National Merit scholarships.

There are many additional accomplishments of the Class of 2014. Among them:

-56 National Merit Scholarship winners
-42 National Hispanic Recognition Finalists
- 7 National Achievement Scholarship winners
-193 Ivy League school acceptances

Recent data released by the Maryland State Department of Education show that nearly 80 percent of MCPS graduates enroll in college within 16 months of graduation—the second-highest rate in Maryland.
