Annual Community Service Day Offers Opportunities for Volunteer Activities to Schools

October 9, 2000
All Montgomery County Public Schools are encouraged to participate in the 14th Annual Montgomery County Community Service Day on Saturday, October 28.

Organized by the Montgomery County Volunteer Center, in conjunction with Volunteer Partnership Montgomery, the day offers an opportunity for teachers, parents and students to come together to build school pride and community spirit. Superintendent Jerry D. Weast is encouraging all schools and PTAs to become involved. Middle and high school students also can receive Student Service Learning credit for participation.

Schools that participate in the day have the opportunity to compete for a Marriott Spirit to Serve Award, offered by Volunteer Partnership Montgomery and sponsored by Marriott International, Inc. The program recognizes and gives a $500 cash grant to one Montgomery County Public School at each level-elementary, middle and high school-that has excelled in providing service to their community. The schools also will be honored at the Outstanding Volunteers of Montgomery County recognition ceremony in April.

For assistance with project ideas or to register your school's project, contact the Montgomery County Volunteer Center at 240-777-2600.
