MCPS Students Advance in Siemens Science Competition

October 22, 2014

Sixteen Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have been named semifinalists in the prestigious Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology and three of those students have been selected as regional finalists.

Hyunsoo Chung of Thomas S. Wootton High School, Matthew Yu of Montgomery Blair High School and Molly Zhang of Richard Montgomery High School were named regional finalists, and will now compete in one of six regional events held in November. They were the only students from Maryland to be selected to compete in the regionals. Winners of these events will compete at the national finals in Washington, D.C., in December, with a chance to win a grand prize scholarship of $100,000.

A total of 16 students from Montgomery Blair, Winston Churchill, Richard Montgomery, Poolesville, and Thomas S. Wootton high schools were named semifinalists in the competition. MCPS accounted for all but one of the state’s semifinalists.

The Siemens Competition is the nation’s leading original research competition for high school students. It is sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and is administered annually by the College Board. More than 2,000 students registered for the 2014-2015 competition, representing 1,780 projects submitted. Students in the Siemens Competition are vying for college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000 in individual and team categories.
