ADVISORY -- Hundreds of MCPS Students to Learn the Science of Bread Baking and the Art of Community Giving
ROCKVILLE, Md. – Approximately 200 Montgomery County public school students will visit Johns Hopkins University on Thursday, April 7 and Friday, April 8, to learn the science of bread baking. Then they will donate the loaves of bread to Interfaith Works Food Pantry.
Fourth-grade students from three elementary schools will travel to Johns Hopkins Montgomery County Campus to participate in the King Arthur Flour Bake for Good Kids Learn Bake Share program. Students will learn the art and science of bread baking – with direct tie-ins to their science curriculum regarding the changing states of matter.
A representative from King Arthur Flour will demonstrate bread baking. Students will then receive flour, a recipe booklet, yeast, a bread donation bag and a dough-scraper. Their homework assignment will be to bake two loaves of bread. Each student will keep one loaf and donate the second loaf to the food pantry. Interfaith Works will use the bread to make croutons, French toast and other menu items for those in need. Students will see real life, practical applications of their science and math curriculum while gaining an interest in STEM careers. This event highlights project-based learning and creative problem solving. Students learn not just about the chemistry of bread, but the science of baking and how to solve problems when they encounter challenges. Events like this hone critical-thinking skills. At the same time, students will develop an appreciation for the importance of giving back to the community.
