Board of Education Seeks Applicants for Appointment to Advisory Committees
The advisory committees serve an important role in providing guidance and counsel to the Board of Education and the superintendent of schools in the development and review of new and revised policies, as well as other subjects during the school year.
Appointments are two years for adults for the family life committee and three years for the career and technology committee. Students serve one year (July 1 to June 30). Unless exempted by the Board, no member shall serve for more than two consecutive terms. Members serve without compensation. Committee meetings are typically held in the evening about once a month.
The Board of Education makes every effort to appoint advisory committees in which the membership is balanced by geographic area, race, gender, and range of viewpoints. A number of vacancies exist on each committee, and therefore, all interested individuals are encouraged to apply. Organizations also are welcome to nominate individuals.
Applications are due by close of business on Friday, May 11, 2001, for appointments to be made at the Board meeting on June 12, 2001.
To obtain a committee application, contact George Margolies by telephone at 301-279-3301 or email him at George_Margolies@fc.mcps.k12.md.us. Completed applications should be returned to Mr. George Margolies, Montgomery County Board of Education, 850 Hungerford Drive, Room 123, Rockville, Maryland 20850. Students wishing to serve should contact the Student Affairs Office at 301-279-4957.
The committees for which applicants may apply are:
Career and Technology Education Community members and career representatives advise the Board of Education and federally funded institutions of post-secondary education on the adequacy of vocational-technical programs being offered. This committee has three-year terms as set by law.
Family Life and Human Development Students, community, and organization representatives work with educators in developing, implementing, and evaluating the family life and human development curriculum and programs.
