MCPS Seniors Earn More Than $343 Million in Scholarships
More than 170 accepted to Ivy League schools
As graduation ceremonies continue for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) high schools, the Class of 2016 has a lot to celebrate.
Graduates from the Class of 2016 have earned $343.5 million in college scholarships to date—an increase of more than $8 million over last year. The total value of scholarships earned is expected to grow over the next few weeks as final data is gathered.
“Our students worked hard and consistently performed at high levels,” said Interim Superintendent Larry A. Bowers. “Their success and the large amount of scholarships earned is a testament to their determination, the support of their families, and the dedication of the MCPS staff who taught and encouraged them.”
The MCPS Class of 2016 has received many prestigious scholarships and awards for outstanding academic performance, community involvement and leadership. Seven students have earned good-through-graduation Gates Millennium Scholarships and 13 graduates have been awarded full-tuition scholarships from the Posse Foundation.
In September, it was announced that 138 MCPS seniors were named National Merit semifinalists and, so far, 48 have been awarded scholarships, with one more round of recipients to be announced in July. In addition, Anna Lavrentieva, a Richard Montgomery High School graduate, was among 160 students nationally to be named a U.S. Presidential Scholar.
