Eastern Middle School's seventh annual Urbanism Conference will be held by eighth grade students in the Humanities and Communication Magnet Program on Friday, June 11, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Bethesda. The Urbanism Conference is a culminating activity of the three years these students have spent in this countywide magnet program for gifted students. A variety of multi-media projects will reflect the urbanization of the Metropolitan D.C. area and the United States. Presentations include public service video announcements regarding urban issues, discussions of potential solutions to urban problems, performances of oral histories featuring the lives and stories of area residents, and slide shows about the effects of urbanism on the Chesapeake Bay watershed. For each presentation, groups of students take on and find solutions for serious challenges that adults and elected officials currently face. Congressman Frank Lucas of Oklahoma will visit Fallsmead Elementary School on Monday, June 14, at 10:00 a.m. He is scheduled to recognize second grade students for their efforts in collecting canned food and other essentials for the victims of tornadoes in Oklahoma. Students, staff and community from Oak View and New Hampshire Estates elementary schools are scheduled to form a human chain linking the two schools across University Boulevard at Piney Branch Road on Tuesday, June 15, at 9:30 a.m. The chain will symbolize the schools' "Success in Unity" theme and is a demonstration of an excellent first year as paired primary and elementary schools with a single principal. Local police will provide traffic control for the brief time that traffic will be interrupted as members of the chain join hands and sing a song.
