Eighteen outstanding student scientists will present results of medical research they have conducted this year through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at a dinner symposium held at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). The symposium will take place on Thursday, May 8, beginning at 5:45 p.m. The high school students’ work was supported by HHMI grants.

The research presentations, which investigate areas such as hormones and the aging process, cell cycle regulators, and premature ovarian failure, will take place at the 13th annual dinner symposium of the Montgomery County Public Schools Student and Teacher Program at NIH. In conducting their research projects, the students worked side-by-side with NIH scientist-mentors throughout the school year following a special summer program in laboratory techniques and practices.

HHMI also funds the work of about 10 Montgomery County Public Schools teachers chosen each year to participate in six weeks of laboratory research at NIH during the summer.
