Nov. 9 Mental Health Fair to Offer Workshops, Resources

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is hosting a Mental Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Gaithersburg High School. Parents, students and community members are invited to hear from MCPS staff, students and outside professionals about topics impacting their children, and learn about resources that support students’ physical, social and psychological well-being.

Do your children have difficulty managing stress? Are you looking for tips to support your child’s mental health in the age of social media? Would you like to learn more about how to take care of yourself so you can support your children better? Are you concerned about your child vaping? Breakout sessions will cover these and many other topics, including mindfulness and yoga; supporting LGBTQ students; food and nutrition; and the importance of staying engaged with secondary students. There will also be a special session on understanding mental health challenges among Asian American youth.

Celeste Malone, associate professor and coordinator of the school psychology program at Howard University, will deliver the keynote address, speaking on the topic, Breaking Barriers to Access Youth Mental Health Care.

Community and governmental organizations will provide information and resources. Slated to attend: Asian American Health Initiative; African American Health Initiative; Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services; Street Outreach Network/Safe Space Program; YMCA; the Montgomery County Council of PTAs; EveryMind; Montgomery County School Psychologists’ Association; Montgomery County Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health; RAP/The Landing; Family Services, Inc.; Youth Opportunities Coalition Bureau; the Montgomery County Police Department Gang Unit; MCPS Restorative Justice; and the MCPS Bilingual Assessment Team.
