Board of Education Meeting Highlights for July 29

The Board of Education met on Tuesday [July 29] and, among other items, approved nine administrative appointments and took tentative action on an amended public charter school policy. The Board deferred action on a construction proposal using private funds until after the Capital Improvements Program is submitted in October.

Policy CFB, Public Charter Schools

The Board tentatively approved amended Policy CFB, Public Charter Schools, that sets forth objectives to be followed with regard to the application, evaluation, and approval process for public charter schools. The revisions are designed to bring the policy into conformity with the state Public Charter School Act of 2003. The revised policy also is based on lessons learned from the review of two previous charter school applications. Final approval in October will follow a period of public comment.

Appointments

The Board approved the following administrative appointments:

§ Dr. Jerrilyn V. Andrews, currently administrative assistant, Office of Shared Accountability, as coordinator, Student Assessment, Office of Shared Accountability.

§ Billie-Jean Bensen, currently assistant principal at Earle B. Wood Middle School, as principal of Herbert Hoover Middle School.

§ Peter J. Cahall, currently principal of Rocky Hill Middle School, as principal of Watkins Mill High School.

§ Sherwin A. Collette, currently administrative assistant, Office of Global Access, as special assistant for Technology Initiatives, Office of Global Access.

§ Dr. Michael J. Doran, currently principal of Thomas W. Pyle Middle School, as principal of Thomas S. Wootton High School.

§ Janet L. Dunn, currently principal, Takoma Park Elementary School, as coordinator, Extended Learning Opportunities.

§ Dennis S. Leighty, currently acting supervisor, Upcounty Field Office, as supervisor, Upcounty Field Office.

§ Samuel A. Rivera, currently assistant principal at Rockville High School, as principal of Benjamin Banneker Middle School.

§ Carol W. Solomon, currently coordinator, Humanities Signature Program, Thomas S. Wootton High School, as coordinator, International Baccalaureate Program, Richard Montgomery High School.

Proposal for Gymnasium Construction with Private Funds

The Board deferred action on a proposal by the Burning Tree Elementary School Educational Foundation to construct a gymnasium for community and school use on the school site using private funds. Action was deferred until the superintendent’s recommended Capital Improvements Program (CIP) for FY 2005 to FY 2010 is presented in October.
