Nominations Sought for Agnes Meyer Award

One exceptional Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) teacher will be selected for recognition and a $3,000 award in the annual Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Awards program sponsored by The Washington Post.

Goals of the program are to recognize excellence in teaching, encourage creative and quality instruction, and contribute in a substantive way to improve education in the Washington metropolitan area.

Nominees must be full-time certified regular or special education teachers of prekindergarten through Grade 12. They must have a minimum of three years of teaching experience in MCPS.

Nominees for the award must:

§ Instill in students a desire to learn and achieve.
§ Understand the individual needs of students, encourage their talents and foster their self-esteem.
§ Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of subject matter and the ability to share it effectively with students.
§ Foster cooperative relationships with colleagues and the community.
§ Demonstrate outstanding leadership.

Each nomination packet must include:

§ A completed application form.
§ A description of the nominee's contributions in each required area.
§ A brief career summary.
§ A sample lesson plan.
§ Three or four statements of support.
§ Two head-and-shoulders photos (minimum 2" x 2", maximum 8" x 10").

Nominations may come from teachers, students, former students, parents, administrators or the general public. Teachers may not nominate themselves.

Send nomination packets to Alan Rosenthal, Office of Human Resources, 7361 Calhoun Place, Suite 401, Rockville, MD 20855 by 5 p.m. on Dec. 19, 2003. Names of the winners from each Washington metropolitan area school district remain confidential until announced by The Washington Post in early spring.
