Statement from Board of Education President Brenda Wolff and Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight on County Executive Marc Elrich’s Proposed FY 2023 Operating Budget

March 16, 2022

Montgomery County Board of Education President Brenda Wolff and Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Monifa B. McKnight released the following statement today concerning County Executive Marc Elrich’s recommended Fiscal Year 2023 Operating Budget and his proposal for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS):

“We appreciate County Executive Marc Elrich’s commitment to supporting Montgomery County Public Schools in his recommended FY 2023 budget proposal.  The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has clearly demonstrated that the public school system is of central importance to the vitality of our community and we know that Mr. Elrich recognizes this.

The Board’s FY 2023 budget proposal places necessary staff development teachers in every school and reading specialists in every elementary school; invests in early childhood education; provides mental health support for students and other critical resources for our growing diverse student body.  MCPS will study the budget recommended by the executive to understand the implications.”

Now is the time to fully invest in the work needed to mitigate pandemic learning disruption and provide an equitable, safe and secure environment for all students and staff.

“We ask the County Council to fully support the MCPS budget request as every dollar is necessary to fully meet the needs of our county’s children, their well-being and their education.”
