A team of students from Montgomery Blair High School is among 64 National Science Bowl regional winners that will compete in the National Science Bowl championship on May 2nd and 3rd. The competition will take place at the National 4-H Center, 7100 Connecticut Avenue, in Chevy Chase.

The Blair team is the only one in Maryland to qualify for the national competition. Team members include Anran Wang, John Shen, Stanley Wang, Ning Bao, and Randy Li. Their coach is Tran Hoang Pham.

The U.S. Department of Energy created the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage high school students to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in these fields. The academic competition on May 2 will begin with a series of quiz matches that will determine the top 16 teams. Questions will be in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, mathematics, and earth and general sciences. Finalist rounds beginning Monday, May 3, will decide the top four teams. Prizes include a two-week trip to England to attend the International Youth Science Forum.

Among the activities preceding the Science Bowl are hydrogen fuel cell model car races on May 1. Sixteen teams of students will design, build, and race the model cars. Winning teams will share $7,500 in cash awards for their schools.
