Montgomery County students won numerous awards at the Maryland History Day competition held at Montgomery College April 24.

Dee Farrell and Nadereh Zolghadr of Julius West Middle School were the Montgomery County History Day Teachers of the Year.

Montgomery County Public Schools students won the following special prizes:

· Junior Prize in Cryptology, given by the National Cryptologic Museum Foundation - Katherine Hillenbrand and Meagan Morse of North Bethesda Middle School for "The Enigma: Exchange of Information in WWII." Teacher: Frederick Delello.

· Senior Prize in Ethical Issues in History, given by the Hoffberger Center for Professional Ethics, University of Baltimore - Pria Anand and Katherine O'Connor of Montgomery Blair High School for "The Pentagon Papers: Creating the Credibility Gap." Teacher: Andrea Lamphier.

· Junior Prize in Innovation in History, given by the Siemens Corporation - Yuanhua Cheng, Nick Cohen, Ethan Goldspiel, Benjamin Hoffma, and J. Blake Loftus of Eastern Middle School for "Malaria's Effect on World War II." Teacher: Matt Johnson.

· Junior Prize in Legal and Constitutional History, given by Williams and Connolly, LLP - Aditha Grama, Sonya Kaufman, and Karissa Tauber of Eastern Middle School for "Exploration of International Law: The Legend of Nuremburg." Teacher: Matt Johnson.

· Senior Prize in Maryland History, given by the Maryland Historical Society - Ben Granata of Paint Branch High School for "The Mettle of Early Mapmakers of Maryland." Teacher: Jill Kulekofsky.

The following students will represent Maryland at the National History Day competition in June.

· Junior Group Exhibits, First Place - Will Aisenberg, Allison Parris, Elliott Rosenbaum, and Mariel Schwartz of Thomas W. Pyle Middle School for "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show: Encountering the West through Theater." Teacher: James Wesley.

· Junior Group Documentaries, First Place - Adelaide Waldrop and Sarah Williams of Eastern Middle School for "Encountering the Electric Guitar: A Revolution in Popular Music." Teacher: Matt Johnson.

· Senior Papers, Second Place - Elaine LaCoss of Poolesville High School for "Encounter and Exchange: Lacrosse." Teacher: George Sproveri.

· Senior Group Exhibits, First Place - Aaron Josephson, Will Solomon, Kurt Williams, and Mike Yoler of John F. Kennedy High School for "C & O Canal: The Flesh-and-Blood Mule Encounters the Iron Horse." Teacher: Richard Sprecher.

· Senior Group Documentaries, Second Place - Joel Bergstein, Frederic Lestina and Eden Schiffman of Walter Johnson High School for "Exploring Space: The Competitive Partnership." Teacher: Sharon Cohen.

· Senior Group Documentaries, First Place - Pria Anand and Katherine O'Connor of Montgomery Blair High School for "The Pentagon Papers: Creating the Credibility Gap." Teacher: Andrea Lamphier.

The County Council honored students and teachers on May 4 for their numerous awards.
