Construction Trades Students Complete House

May 27, 2004
A Cornerstone Ceremony on Thursday, May 27, at 6:30 p.m. will mark the completion of the 33rd house built by students in the construction trades program at Thomas Edison High School of Technology in cooperation with the Montgomery County Student Construction Trades Foundation, Inc. The ceremony will take place at the home site at 13005 Connecticut Avenue in Silver Spring.

The members of the foundation -- leaders in the building and real estate field -- have provided their expertise and guidance to the Young American Student Design/Build House Project. Building construction students at Edison did the design, general construction, masonry, carpentry, electricity, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and landscaping for this house. The cornerstone plaque also was designed by a student. More than 175 students have been involved in the project.

Six of the student-built homes are located in the Connecticut Avenue Estates subdivision. Proceeds of the sale of the homes are returned to the educational program to cover the cost of additional land, financing, and supplemental training materials.
