June 5, 2006
President Michelle Bachelet Will Answer Student Questions During an Assembly at Westland Middle School

Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile, is scheduled to visit Westland Middle School in Bethesda at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 8.

President Bachelet was a student at the former Western (now Westland) Middle School in 1963 and at Wood Acres Elementary School in 1962. She expressed a special interest in visiting her former schools during her current visit to the United States, meeting students and staff, and learning about the English for Speakers of Other Languages program in Montgomery County Public Schools.

The visit, which is expected to last an hour, will begin with a ceremony outside the school building. The ceremony will include the playing of the national anthems of Chile and the United States by the Westland student band and special greetings from Westland students and their families who come from Chile.

The opening ceremony will be followed by a program in the school cafeteria that will include a question and answer session among President Bachelet and students. Staff and students representing both Westland Middle School and Wood Acres Elementary School will participate.
