More Than 40 Career Focus Programs -- Many with College Credit -- Offered to Montgomery County High School Students
Every high school in the county offers a core group of the career related programs, including technology education, business education and computer science (which provides both an emphasis on programming and software and multimedia). Some individual high schools offer specialty programs such as visual arts at Albert Einstein High School or professional restaurant management at Damascus and Paint Branch high schools. A Fire Science Program is offered at the county's Public Service Training Center.
The Thomas Edison High School of Technology serves as a regional career focused center, offering many of the same individual programs as high schools but as part of a more comprehensive career development curriculum that includes the five main career focus areas or clusters. These include programs in the fields of business management and finance, engineering and manufacturing, health and bioscience, arts and communication, and consumer services and human resource services.
Medical career classes are offered at regional high school sites that have partnerships with area hospitals and medical facilities, which reflects the growing trend in school and industry collaboration for the training of a new generation of highly skilled students who are eligible for immediate employment at graduation -- even if they continue with college studies.
The programs also include what was once considered traditional career and vocational education programs that focus on the construction industry, personal services, and transportation. These programs have retained their position as employment staples, with innovative skill and academic development designed to prepare students for management and entrepreneurial opportunities.
