October 21, 2008
ASK MCPS Drop-In Coffee To Feature National Expert on Family Engagement from the Harvard Graduate School of Education

Dr. Karen Mapp Will Speak with Parents and Share Ways that Families and Schools Can Work Together to Support Student Achievement

Parents and other community members are invited to an ASK MCPS drop-in coffee on Thursday, October 23, at the offices of the Department of Family and Community Partnerships, 451 Hungerford Drive, Suite 508, Rockville. The coffee will be held from 3 to 7 p.m.

Dr. Karen Mapp, national expert on partnerships among families, schools, and the community, will be greeting parents at the coffee from 3 to 5 p.m. Dr. Mapp is a lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and co-author of the book, Beyond the Bake Sale--The Essential Guide to Family-School Partnerships. She has been working with Montgomery County Public Schools since last December, when she first visited MCPS to share her expertise and insights on best practices in family engagement.

At the coffee, parents also can ask questions of bilingual staff members, find out about programs and services in the school system, and take home great tips on how to help their children succeed in school. Staff will be on hand to help parents activate and use their Edline accounts and demonstrate other helpful MCPS web resources.

ASK MCPS events are part of the continuing efforts of the Office of Communications and Family Outreach to strengthen the relationship between families and the school system and to support learning at home.

For questions about the coffee, contact Eric Davis, acting director, Department of Family and Community Partnerships, at 301-279-3100.
