Board of Education to Conduct Public Hearings on Facilities, Boundaries

November 6, 2009
Board of Education to Conduct Public Hearings on Capital Improvements Program and Boundary Recommendations

The Board of Education will hold two public hearings next week on facilities and boundary studies. The Board will consider the Superintendent’s recommended boundary changes for East Silver Spring, Piney Branch, Sligo Creek, and Takoma Park elementary schools, as well as a Board of Education alternative to the recommendation. The Board also will consider the Superintendent’s Recommended Capital Improvements Program (CIP) for FY 2011–FY 2016. Although this document includes a recommendation to close Monocacy Elementary School, the Board of Education must adopt procedures to review the proposal to close Monocacy.

The public hearings will take place on Wednesday, November 11, and Thursday, November 12, at 7 p.m., at the Carver Educational Services Center Auditorium, 850 Hungerford Drive, in Rockville. Individuals interested in testifying during these hearings should contact the Board office at 301-279-3617 to register to testify. Additional written testimony/comments may be submitted to the Board office, 850 Hungerford Drive, Suite 123, Rockville, MD, 20850 or emailed to boe@mcpsmd.org.

On November 19 at 6:00 p.m., the Board will make its decisions regarding the boundaries, CIP, and the procedure to be used to review and take action on the Superintendent’s recommendation to close Monocacy Elementary School. This meeting is not to take final action on the school closure.
