MCPS Recognized with National Award for Green Cleaning Practices

January 5, 2010
Division of School Plant Operations Receives Kudos for Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Practices in School Buildings

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is one of two school districts nationwide to receive a Grand Award for environmentally friendly cleaning practices from American School & University magazine. The award also is sponsored by the Healthy Schools Campaign and the Green Cleaning Network.

Winners were selected by a jury of experts in the green cleaning profession for their use of green cleaning products, equipment, and supplies, as well as their use of cleaning procedures that protect the environment.

The MCPS Division of School Plant Operations was cited for its high standards in the selection of all cleaning materials, which includes a review by certified hazardous-materials managers, and occupational safety and other health experts. Many of the products used are in recyclable packaging. MCPS made a major improvement in the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products back in 1997, with a change from oil-based to water-based floor finisher.

The school system also uses equipment, such as portable “backpack” vacuums, that minimizes the dispersal of dust and other particles into the air. In addition, all building services employees receive training on green cleaning procedures and safety.
