May 7, 2010
Six high school seniors in Montgomery County Public Schools have been awarded Gates Millennium Scholarships. The awards amount to four-year scholarships that provide financial support to minority students with significant financial need to enable them to complete an undergraduate college education. The students are among 1,000 scholarship winners nationwide who have demonstrated leadership abilities through community service or other extracurricular activities and have maintained a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 3.3.

The scholarship program is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Continuing Gates Millennium Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree in selected academic disciplines.

The six students and the schools they attend are:

Leuk Mulugeta Woldeyohannes—Wheaton High School
Cecilia Adriana Ramirez—Richard Montgomery High School
Gabriela Monserrat Medina—Colonel Zadok Magruder High School
Mehrit Tekeste—Montgomery Blair High School
Hyun Min Park—Walter Johnson High School
