Gaithersburg Middle School a Partner in Arts Professional Development Grant with the Kennedy Center

June 6, 2000
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, along with regional partners including Gaithersburg Middle School, has been awarded a three-year grant by the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education (NFIE). The "A Change of Course" grant will help with content-focused professional development for teachers.

Gaithersburg Middle School is among eight regional arts magnet schools that are partners with the Kennedy Center in the grant, along with the Maryland State Teachers Association and Virginia Education Association.

NFIE, the foundation of the National Educational Association, awarded the Kennedy Center a yearlong planning grant to examine its local educational outreach. The new grant will enable the Kennedy Center and partners to implement the changes they envisioned as a result of the planning grant. The initiative builds on the relationships already established between the Kennedy Center and faculty members from Gaithersburg Middle School and the other schools involved.

As a group, they will examine appropriate content and new structures for continuous staff development in the arts. The work is tied to academic content standards in Maryland and Virginia. It also entails significant teacher involvement in curriculum planning, writing and assessment.
